Michigan banned the box for state government jobs only, and state law blocks Michigan cities from protecting you at a private employer.
Private employers Government jobs only A 2015 state law bars any Michigan city or county from telling a private employer what it may ask on an application, and a 2018 amendment extended that to the interview. Detroit’s ordinance was never anything but city hiring. State department applications dropped the question by executive directive in 2018, which is policy, not law. Michigan does give you two real things against a private employer: a misdemeanor arrest that did not end in conviction cannot be used, and a set-aside record cannot be used, with clean slate setting aside many misdemeanors after seven years and eligible felonies after ten.
