A Hawaii employer can only ask about your record after they offer you the job, and they cannot reach back more than seven years on a felony or five on a misdemeanor.
Private employers Covered Every employer is covered, including a one-person shop, and Hawaii has had this law since 1998. They can only pull the offer if the conviction has a rational relationship to the actual duties of the job, so a blanket no felons rule does not hold up. Around twenty job categories are carved out, including armed security, financial institutions, insurance and school jobs, and there is no notice-and-respond step before a rejection. Haw. Rev.
