Private employers Government jobs only State law says the state, its agencies, any political subdivision and any municipality may not turn you down solely because of a prior conviction, and may deny you only for a felony or first-degree misdemeanor directly related to the job. None of that reaches private employers. Gainesville is the one Florida city that does: its Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance covers private employers with fifteen or more workers based in the city, bars any criminal history inquiry before a conditional offer, and requires an individualized assessment. Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami-Dade and the rest cover their own hiring, and Key West has nothing at all. Fla.
